MIMOS STRENGTHENS GLOBAL POSITIONING THROUGH MoU WITH INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ASSESMENT (IITA), KOREA

Kuala Lumpur, August 25, 2005 - MIMOS Berhad, Malaysia’s leading research and development (R&D) organisation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and microelectronics, today expands its network of global partnerships through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Information Technology Assessment (IITA) of Korea.

The MoU sees MIMOS and IITA combining forces to encourage and promote cooperation in technology strategy, commercialisation, R&D management , as well as personnel exchange and training, among others.

“This initiative is part of MIMOS’ ongoing efforts to build R&D collaborations with global partners. We have been impressed with the calibre of IITA researchers as well as its role in the development of Korea's successful high-tech industry,” said MIMOS President and CEO, Tengku Dr Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen.

MIMOS has always believed in the power of partnerships in order to advance in the realm of ICT R&D. The MoU will not only benefit the organisation by knowledge sharing, but most importantly Malaysia will gain through tapping the experience of Korea in becoming undeniably one of the most advanced ICT countries, he added.

The MoU is the result of a MIMOS delegation visit to IITA in January 2005 to benchmark the Korean IT industry.

Established in 1992, IITA is Korea’s leading R&D institute specialising in information and telecommunications. The institute has played a vital role for the growth and increasing competitiveness of the Korean IT industry. The IITA had strongly supported the Korean government's successful implementation of the IT839 Strategy – which turned Korea into one of the strongest IT nations in the world. The institute was also involved in devising Korea’s “IT New Growth Engine” to increase the country’s global IT competitiveness and connectivity.

By collaborating with MIMOS, IITA will gain from joint research programmes, and an extablished platform to interact with the Malaysian ICT industry. Through MIMOS, they could also access into the ICT and microelectronics research network in Malaysia, and in other ASEAN member countries.
The MoU signing coincided with a return visit to MIMOS from a team of IITA researchers headed by its President Tae Hyun Kim.
